The past several years have seen an increase in the number of league opportunities available to players. They all claim to have the best something, be it fields, location, teams, etc. At Tri-State we don't make claims, we give facts. For over a decade, Tri-State Lacrosse has provided players throughout the state with the opportunity to improve their lacrosse skills during the fall and winter months through a style known as the "Indoor Box".
If you have ever walked into our Turf City location or visited the Peddie School's Von Athletic Center and asked "What's with the boards?" you would not have been the first! Both locations were chosen with that reason in mind. The boards and the Indoor Box play that comes with them have proven to be the best for pre-season training.
We have provided you with the basics of how the Indoor Box and those funny boards can improve your game immensely.
NON-STOP PLAY - Boards create a non-stop playing environment. The training benefits to this are endless.
+ There is constant motion making players continually adjust between offense and defense.
+ Shots never go out of bounds, meaning there are more opportunities totake second and third chance shots. This forces all positions to stay on their toes and never give up on the ball.
SMALLER SURFACE AREA IMPROVES STICK SKILLS - In playing on a smaller surface area, certain bad habits are easily exposed. Players, who "hang" their stick or choose to sidearm the ball, will have a higher degree of difficulty. These bad habits will usually result in the ball being checked away. This forces players to use good fundamentals in order to be successful. The smaller area mimics the 8m arc and makes offensive players work harder to get open and createspace. Players become better at concepts like the "draw and dump" and setting picks.
PLAY BOTH WAYS - With indoor, players run the full field. This gives both offense and defense a better understanding of the other's position and the midfield. The more you understand the other positions, the better you can learn to dominate them. The best defenders are those who understand offensive movement and visa versa. This knowledge also prevents players from becoming one dimensional, and make them a much greater asset to any team.
GOALIES SEE MORE SHOTS - Since the ball never goes out of bounds and play does not stop, there are infinitely more shots taken. Goalies see more shots than they ever would in a normal game situation. This gives them the opportunity to work on the footwork, position and reaction time. With the ball ricocheting off boards, there are a lot more second shot attempts. Rebounded shots and second shot attempts are often the most difficult for goalies and the increased practice can have a huge effect during the regular season.
On top of all this, the non-stop action is one of the best ways to condition during the pre-season. When playing on a full field, there are often times that you can stop and stand around while the ball is in play at the other end. When playing in the Indoor Box, there is no standing still. If the ball transitions to the other side of the field, you are going with it. The constant movement and running is a great way of improving your conditioning and cardiovascular health.
